Stepping Up Your Word Skills!
Welcome to the next level! This quiz focuses on more advanced prefixes and suffixes you'll need to know to meet expectations in KS2. Understanding these word parts will massively expand your vocabulary and help you tackle more complex texts. Mastering these skills is a key step towards becoming an expert speller and writer.
Advanced Word-Building Strategies
- Know your 'in-'s: The prefix 'in-' can change to 'im-', 'il-', or 'ir-' depending on the first letter of the root word (e.g., 'impolite', 'illegal', 'irresponsible').
- The '-tion' vs '-sion' rule: If the root word ends in 't' or 'te', the suffix is often '-tion' (attraction). If it ends in 'd' or 'se', the suffix is often '-sion' (comprehension).
- '-able' or '-ible'?: This can be tricky! Often, if you can see a whole root word, you add '-able' (dependable). If the root isn't a complete word, it might be '-ible' (terrible).
- Verb to Noun: Suffixes like '-ment' (enjoyment), '-ness' (happiness), and '-ance' (importance) can turn verbs and adjectives into nouns.
