Advanced Word-Building Strategies Read aloud

  • Know your 'in-'s: The prefix 'in-' can change to 'im-', 'il-', or 'ir-' depending on the first letter of the root word (e.g., 'impolite', 'illegal', 'irresponsible').
  • The '-tion' vs '-sion' rule: If the root word ends in 't' or 'te', the suffix is often '-tion' (attraction). If it ends in 'd' or 'se', the suffix is often '-sion' (comprehension).
  • '-able' or '-ible'?: This can be tricky! Often, if you can see a whole root word, you add '-able' (dependable). If the root isn't a complete word, it might be '-ible' (terrible).
  • Verb to Noun: Suffixes like '-ment' (enjoyment), '-ness' (happiness), and '-ance' (importance) can turn verbs and adjectives into nouns.
