Tips for Prefix & Suffix Power Read aloud

  • Know Your Opposites: Prefixes like 'un-', 'dis-', and 'mis-' often mean 'not' or the opposite of the root word. 'unhappy' is the opposite of 'happy'.
  • Think About Meaning: A suffix can change what a word does. Adding '-ful' means 'full of' (careful), while adding '-less' means 'without' (careless).
  • Look for the Root: Try to find the main word inside the longer word. If you can spell the root word, you're halfway there!
  • Watch for Spelling Changes: Sometimes you have to change the root word a little when adding a suffix, like changing 'y' to 'i' in 'happy' to make 'happiness'.
